Otoplasty (ear reshaping) in İstanbul — Op. Dr. Nuran Kalekoğlu Erkalp
Ear surgery

Otoplasty in İstanbul.

A gentle reshaping of prominent or asymmetric ears, setting them in a more natural position closer to the head. The aim isn’t to pin the ears flat — it’s balanced, natural ears that simply suit the face, with the scar hidden behind the ear.

Overview

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty — ear reshaping surgery — most often corrects prominent ears that sit too far from the head, but it can also improve ear shape, reduce asymmetry between the two ears and refine an over-large or cup-shaped ear. The cartilage is reshaped and the ear is repositioned in a more natural, balanced way.

For many people, prominent ears are something they’ve felt self-conscious about for years. The goal of otoplasty is simple: ears that look natural and proportional to the face — not pinned flat or over-corrected — through a small incision hidden in the crease behind the ear.

What it addresses

What otoplasty can correct.

Every pair of ears is different, so the plan is shaped around what stands out for you. Common concerns include:

  • Prominent ears that sit too far from the head
  • A missing or shallow antihelical fold (the ear’s natural curve)
  • A deep conchal bowl that pushes the ear outward
  • Asymmetry between the two ears
  • Large, cup-shaped or folded-over ears
  • A prominent or uneven earlobe

Who may be suitable for otoplasty?

Because the ears are close to their full size from around the age of six, otoplasty can be considered from childhood through adulthood. Suitability and timing are always decided individually, after a detailed examination.

Often a good fit

  • Prominent ears, in good general health
  • Noticeable asymmetry between the ears
  • Long-standing self-consciousness about the ears
  • Realistic expectations about the result

× We’ll be honest if

  • There is an active ear or skin infection to treat first
  • Expectations don’t match what surgery can safely deliver
  • For a child, the timing would be better a little later
  • A detailed examination suggests a different approach
The technique

Reshaped, not just pinned back.

Through an incision usually hidden in the crease behind the ear, the cartilage is reshaped rather than simply pulled back. Where the ear’s natural curve (the antihelical fold) is missing or shallow, it is recreated; where a deep conchal bowl pushes the ear out, it can be reduced — so the ear sits closer to the head in a natural position.

  • Hidden incision

Placed in the crease behind the ear, so the scar is well concealed.

  • Reshaped cartilage

The natural curve is recreated and a deep bowl reduced — not just pinned flat.

  • Balanced for symmetry

Both ears are refined together so they match and suit the face.

The procedure

How is otoplasty performed?

Otoplasty usually takes around 1.5–2 hours for both ears, under local anaesthesia with sedation or — often for children — general anaesthesia. It’s typically a day case, with a supportive headband worn afterwards to protect the new shape.

Cartilage reshaping

The ear’s natural curve recreated for a soft, real result.

Hidden behind-ear scar

The incision sits in the crease behind the ear, out of view.

Symmetry first

Both ears refined together so they truly match.

Recovery

How long is recovery after otoplasty?

A supportive headband is worn day and night in the first week to protect the ears, then often at night for a while after. Mild swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal early on; sleeping on your back and avoiding pressure on the ears helps healing.

Realistic expectations

Natural ears, not pinned flat.

A good otoplasty result is one you stop noticing — ears that look natural and proportional, set in a comfortable position rather than flattened against the head. The two ears should match, with soft, real-looking curves rather than a sharp, over-corrected line.

As with any surgery, results vary from person to person, and a small difference between the ears is normal — perfect symmetry isn’t the goal. A balanced, natural improvement is.

Ears that simply suit the face — not the first thing you notice, and not pinned flat.
